“He took up the development of Islamic banking as a mission and remained committed to it throughout his life.”
- on the vision of late Mr Muazzam Ali, Founder and Chairman
The Institute was the vision of its founder, the late Mr Muazzam Ali, who initially established the registered charity International Centre for Islamic Studies (ICIS) in London during the 1980s – a city renowned as a global financial hub. His goal was simple but ambitious: to create a wider base of knowledge and understanding of the Islamic financial system and to promote meaningful exchange of information between Islamic and conventional financial systems.
Since its inception, IIBI has delivered this vision through continuing professional education, lectures, seminars, training programmes, conferences, research, and publications.
“Islamic finance can only develop with well-qualified individuals committed to its principles and practice.”
The Institute serves as a platform for students, professionals, and institutions to learn, network, and engage with the principles and practice of Islamic finance. IIBI’s work is grounded in ethical and professional standards, supporting the development of Sharia-compliant banking, insurance (takaful), and related financial services. The Institute aims to foster a better understanding of Islamic finance, guided by the principles of Maqasid al Shari’ah, which emphasise fairness, social responsibility, and public benefit.
“Co-operation between Islamic and Western banking is not only possible, but necessary.”
- on bridging knowledge between financial systems
Over the years, IIBI has become a trusted voice and facilitator in the Islamic finance industry, helping to bridge knowledge between Islamic and Western financial systems, encourage best practice, and contribute to the professional development of individuals across multiple sectors. Through its activities, the Institute continues to promote the human dimension of finance, ethical decision-making, and the responsible management of financial resources for the broader benefit of society.
“There is no contradiction between adherence to Sharia principles and financial success.”
