IIBI thematic workshops were held annually in London, United Kingdom, from 2008 and designed and organised with the International Shari’ah Research Academy (ISRA), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where important themes were discussed in an open consultation process. They addressed the practical challenges by engaging in structured, but at the same time, open and honest discussion between active professionals, key staff members of Islamic financial institutions and Shari’ah scholars involved in Islamic finance.

The last IIBI/ISRA Annual Thematic Workshop was held in 2013.
